If you just found out that you are pregnant, there are certain things that you can do to help you have a healthy pregnancy. If you’re a first time mom, you may not know where to start or what things to consider as you embark on the journey of motherhood. These steps will ensure that your pregnancy is as healthy and smooth as possible. With the right support system and practitioner, you’re already well on your way to a successful pregnancy.
Get the proper prenatal care.
It’s important to have the best prenatal care throughout your pregnancy. Your doctor or midwife will monitor your growing baby and offer you the pregnancy help that you need. This person will be able to advise you on many topics in relation to a healthy pregnancy. If you have yet to establish care, Care Net would be happy to help you establish care. We have an extensive referral network of providers to direct you to, so you can get proper prenatal care or address any medical concerns you may have.
We’re going to debunk one of the biggest myths out there, right now: you are not actually eating for two. Would you be surprised to learn you only need about 300 extra calories per day for your baby? Make sure to continue to eat healthy to keep your weight gain in check.
Surround yourself with a great support system.
It’s important to have adequate support as you go through this experience. This could include a partner, family members, friends, coworkers and your health professional. You need to feel supported during this time to help you get through both the pregnancy as well as labor. If you ever need anyone to talk to, we have incredible support, education and resources through our Parenting Support Programs at Care Net.
Continue to exercise!
You can continue to exercise as long as you’re not participating in high-risk activities. This exercise will help keep you in better condition for labor.
Take your prenatal vitamins.
Don’t forget to take your vitamins daily. The folic acid is especially important in supporting your pregnancy.
If you smoke, it’s important to break this habit now. It can cause a lot of harm to your baby.
Cut back on caffeine.
You don’t have to give up your coffee altogether, but you may want to reduce it if you’re a high consumer. Talk to your doctor, but less than 200 mg per day is recommended.
Make sure to keep stress in check.
Pregnancy can be a highly stressful time, as you worry about your baby and how this tiny person will change your life. You need to make sure to de-stress during pregnancy. Whether this is through yoga or a massage, you need to do something that helps you. Spend time investing into yourself as you enter this new stage of life.
Get some rest.
You will be more tired than usual, especially in the first trimester, so it’s important to get extra rest during this time as well, when you can.
Take care of yourself during this time and don’t forget to reach out to your support system as you need it.
